NNPC’s Oil Security and Federation Claims Rise to ₦11.2tn

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited recorded ₦11.2 trillion in claims from the Federation in 2025, covering costs and advances incurred on behalf of the government, including expenditure connected with protecting Nigeria’s oil and gas assets.

The figure reflects the scale of financial obligations associated with energy security and other receivables amid persistent challenges such as crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and disruptions to petroleum infrastructure.

However, the ₦11.2 trillion should not be interpreted simply as fresh cash spent on security during 2025. NNPC’s audited accounts classify the amount as energy-security costs and other receivables owed by the Federation.

The development comes despite an improvement in NNPC’s broader operating performance, with the national oil company reporting higher production and a 33% increase in profit after tax.

The figures again highlight how security and infrastructure challenges continue to impose significant financial pressures on Nigeria’s petroleum industry. Punch Newspapers
