Nigeria’s FAAC Revenue Hits ₦31.46 Trillion in Nine Months, Signalling Higher Government Receipts
Nigeria’s Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) recorded gross revenue of ₦31.46 trillion between January and September 2026, exceeding the full-year collections recorded in each of the four years from 2021 to 2024.
The development highlights the growth in government revenue collections and raises important questions about fiscal sustainability, public expenditure and the economic impact of increased government receipts.
Significant Growth in Government Revenue
According to an analysis released by Agora Policy, gross FAAC revenue reached ₦31.46 trillion during the first nine months of 2026.
This represents a 12.6% increase over the ₦27.95 trillion recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.
The latest figure also exceeds the ₦28.74 trillion collected throughout 2024 and is approaching the ₦35.81 trillion recorded for the whole of 2025.
However, these comparisons are based on nominal revenue figures and do not account for inflation or changes in the purchasing power of the naira.
Breakdown of Revenue Collections
The report shows that statutory revenue accounted for approximately ₦24.25 trillion, representing 77.1% of gross receipts.
Value-added tax contributed ₦7.21 trillion, accounting for the remaining 22.9%.
Of the total gross collections, approximately ₦20.81 trillion was distributed, including a ₦450 billion augmentation.
The Federal Government received about ₦7.35 trillion, while state governments received ₦7.01 trillion and local governments received ₦4.92 trillion.
Oil-producing states also received ₦1.53 trillion in derivation allocations.
The figures demonstrate the substantial financial resources flowing through Nigeria’s revenue-sharing system.
Opportunities for Infrastructure and Economic Development
Higher government receipts could create additional fiscal capacity for public infrastructure, education, healthcare and other essential services.
Increased investment in transportation, electricity and public facilities could improve the overall business environment.
For private-sector operators, well-directed public expenditure may also generate opportunities through infrastructure contracts, supply-chain activities and broader commercial demand.
However, these benefits depend on how effectively government resources are allocated and managed.
Fiscal Sustainability Remains a Concern
Despite the increase in revenue, Agora Policy highlighted challenges associated with fluctuating monthly receipts and weaker-than-expected mineral revenue.
The report also indicated that the pace of revenue growth was slowing.
These concerns underscore the importance of prudent fiscal planning, revenue diversification and transparency in government expenditure.
Higher nominal collections do not automatically translate into stronger purchasing power or improved public services.
The Bigger Picture
Nigeria’s rising government revenue presents an opportunity to strengthen public finances and support long-term economic development.
Nevertheless, the quality and efficiency of expenditure will determine whether these gains translate into meaningful improvements for businesses and households.
For investors and entrepreneurs, stronger infrastructure, predictable fiscal policies and effective public-sector management will be more important than revenue growth figures alone.
