LCCI Calls for Tax Incentives and Affordable Financing to Boost Clean Energy Adoption Among Nigerian SMEs

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has urged the Federal Government to introduce targeted tax incentives, affordable financing and supportive policies to accelerate the adoption of cleaner energy solutions among small and medium-sized enterprises in Nigeria.

The proposal comes amid growing concerns over the high cost of energy, which continues to affect business productivity, profitability and competitiveness across multiple sectors of the economy.

Addressing Rising Energy Costs for Businesses

Speaking at the chamber’s annual gas industry conference in Lagos, LCCI President Leye Kupoluyi identified energy affordability as one of the major challenges confronting Nigerian businesses.

Many enterprises continue to depend heavily on petrol and diesel generators due to unreliable electricity supply.

This dependence exposes businesses to fluctuating fuel prices, maintenance expenses and operational disruptions.

Industries particularly affected include manufacturing, food processing, hospitality, retail and other energy-intensive sectors.

The chamber believes that improving access to alternative energy sources could significantly reduce these challenges.

Proposed Incentives for Clean Energy Investment

The LCCI is advocating policy measures that would make cleaner energy technologies more affordable and accessible.

These include tax incentives, accelerated capital allowances and reduced import-related costs for qualifying equipment such as solar installations, battery storage systems and energy-efficient machinery.

The chamber also called for collaboration among commercial banks, development finance institutions, government agencies and private investors to establish dedicated financing opportunities for small businesses.

Such arrangements could help enterprises overcome the substantial initial investment required to adopt alternative energy technologies.

Supporting Small Businesses Through Gas Adoption

Beyond solar energy, the chamber highlighted the potential of liquefied petroleum gas, compressed natural gas and other gas-based solutions to support business operations.

As part of practical efforts to encourage cleaner energy usage, the Eko Gas Scheme 3.0 distributed 100 LPG cylinders and accompanying accessories to selected small businesses in Lagos.

The beneficiaries included food vendors, caterers and other entrepreneurs whose daily operations depend on affordable cooking energy.

The initiative seeks to encourage safer and more efficient energy practices while reducing barriers to adoption.

Implications for Nigeria’s Business Environment

Improved access to reliable energy could help businesses reduce operating expenses, enhance productivity and protect profit margins.

For small enterprises operating with limited capital, energy savings could release resources for business expansion, workforce development and technological investment.

Wider adoption may also create opportunities for renewable energy providers, equipment suppliers, installation companies and energy financing institutions.

The Bigger Picture

Nigeria’s transition towards more affordable and cleaner energy solutions presents both an economic opportunity and an infrastructure challenge.

Government incentives, accessible financing and private-sector participation will be essential in making alternative energy technologies commercially viable for smaller businesses.

By prioritising energy affordability and reliability, Nigeria could strengthen its SME sector, encourage entrepreneurship and support more sustainable economic growth.
