GTBank and Squad Introduce Google Pay for Easier Online Checkout
Nigeria’s online payments market has gained another checkout option. Guaranty Trust Holding Company says customers of GTBank can add eligible debit cards to Google Wallet and use Google Pay for online purchases at participating merchants, including eligible international transactions.
The launch also reaches businesses through Squad, the payment gateway operated by GTCO subsidiary HabariPay. Google Pay is now available within Squad’s checkout experience, giving merchants another way to accept payments without building a separate integration. The feature is enabled by default, although merchants can turn it off.
For shoppers, saved payment credentials can reduce the need to type card details repeatedly. Tokenisation also means a merchant does not receive the customer’s actual card number as part of the Google Pay transaction. Card eligibility and merchant acceptance still determine whether a specific payment will work.
For ecommerce operators, the bigger business story is checkout conversion. Any reduction in unnecessary form fields may help prevent customers from abandoning purchases. Merchants should review payment acceptance, fees, settlement procedures and customer support before making the option central to their sales strategy.
