Nine dead, eight rescued in Jigawa boat accident – NEMA
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the deaths of nine individuals in a tragic boat accident that occurred at Zangon Maje Village, located in Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State.
The update was shared on Thursday via NEMA’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to a report from NEMA’s Kano Operations Office, the unfortunate incident took place on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m. The boat, which was carrying 17 passengers—mostly young girls, capsized mid-journey while traveling from Digawa Village in Jahun LGA to Zangon Maje Village in Taura LGA.
The statement revealed,
“Upon the arrival of the NEMA team at the scene, it was confirmed that eight individuals were rescued alive by local divers, while nine others were unfortunately confirmed dead.”
In response to the tragedy, NEMA worked in collaboration with the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (JSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and local government officials to sensitise the community on the importance of adhering to safety protocols during water travel.
As part of the coordinated response efforts, NIWA also donated life jackets to the community, aiming to prevent future occurrences and enhance waterway safety awareness.
