LAWMA Targets Ajah-Lekki Businesses, Markets Over Waste Management Violations

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has identified several markets, commercial establishments and institutional facilities across the Ajah-Lekki axis for compliance enforcement over persistent violations of waste management requirements and other environmental regulations.

The Director of Public Affairs at LAWMA, Mukaila Sanusi, disclosed this in a statement obtained by The PUNCH.

According to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the facilities were identified following monitoring activities that revealed continued non-compliance with approved waste management standards.

Among the establishments listed are Kodak Moment, Bayrock Lifestyle, Caelum Nigeria Ltd, Alpha Pharmacy, Amazon Farm, Ramayaa Mall, Simply Africa Place, Aries Safia, Wolly Mall, Delightful Toy Shop and New Creation Church.

Other facilities identified include The Logic Church, Dow Eye Clinic, Time Oak Hotel, L OMP, Furniture House, Fashion Design Factory, De Phantom Hotel, Elizade Motors, Trinity, Living Faith Church, Premium Rentals, Christ Chapel Church and QMB Mart.

LAWMA Moves Against Persistent Defaulters

Gbadegesin said the authority had continued to engage businesses and other operators across the corridor to encourage compliance, but warned that establishments that persistently violate waste management regulations would face enforcement action.

“We have continued to engage and monitor facilities to secure compliance, but where establishments continue to default after being given the opportunity to comply, we will take the necessary enforcement measures.”

He stressed that proper waste management was essential to ensuring that commercial activities did not undermine public health, environmental standards and the quality of life of residents.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that commercial activities do not compromise proper waste management or the right of residents to a clean and orderly environment.”

The LAWMA chief executive said the authority would continue to combine engagement and improved waste management services with firm enforcement against persistent violations.

Illegal Structures, Indiscriminate Dumping Trigger Action

The latest enforcement drive followed a monitoring exercise conducted on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, by LAWMA’s Project WISE team in collaboration with officials of Kick Against Indiscipline, the military and the Nigeria Police.

The exercise covered the Eleganza and Issa Imamu Market areas of Ajah.

At Eleganza, the enforcement team dismantled illegal structures erected along road corridors and pedestrian walkways by traders.

According to LAWMA, the structures had obstructed the movement of motorists and pedestrians.

At Issa Imamu Market, the authority sealed the market following what it described as persistent indiscriminate disposal of waste along the roadside.

The action forms part of LAWMA’s broader efforts to enforce environmental regulations and discourage activities that contribute to environmental degradation across Lagos.

Businesses Urged to Comply

Gbadegesin urged businesses, markets, institutions and residents across the Ajah-Lekki corridor to comply with approved waste management requirements and cooperate with LAWMA enforcement teams.

He said sustained compliance was necessary to prevent indiscriminate waste disposal, protect public spaces and maintain a cleaner environment.

The LAWMA boss reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to continuous monitoring, stakeholder engagement and enforcement as it seeks to improve waste management standards across Lagos State.

The latest action also sends a clear message to businesses operating in high-traffic commercial corridors: compliance with environmental regulations is not optional, and persistent violations could result in enforcement measures.
