Adelagun Brings Over 26 Years of Banking Experience

Adelagun has more than 26 years of experience in banking and financial markets across Africa, having joined Standard Chartered in 2007.

Before becoming acting CEO, he served as Executive Director and Head of Markets for Nigeria and Africa, as well as Head of Rates and Credit Trading for West Africa.

Bank Targets Sustainable Growth and International Opportunities

Commenting on his confirmation, Adelagun said Nigeria remained a significant long-term market for Standard Chartered.

He stated that his priorities would include strengthening relationships with clients, pursuing disciplined and sustainable growth, and leveraging the bank’s international network to deliver greater value to businesses and investors.

The bank also intends to connect Nigerian companies and investors with opportunities across Africa, Asia, the Middle East and other international markets.

This strategy places cross-border banking, international investment flows and access to global financial networks at the centre of the lender’s approach to the Nigerian market.

For Nigerian businesses, these services could provide opportunities to access international markets, establish commercial relationships and explore financing and investment prospects beyond the domestic economy. <Cite refs={[“turn624377search2″,”turn624377search3”]}/>

Contributions to Nigeria’s Financial Markets

Beyond his executive responsibilities, Adelagun has contributed to the development of Nigeria’s domestic financial markets.

According to reports, he led work associated with the introduction of benchmark bonds in Nigeria, an initiative aimed at deepening the domestic bond market and supporting the country’s inclusion in the JPMorgan Emerging Markets Index.

He also pioneered bond-trading desks at First Securities Discount House, now FSDH Merchant Bank, and Standard Chartered Bank.

Earlier in his career, Adelagun worked in the banking operations, commercial banking and treasury departments of Access Bank Plc before joining Standard Chartered.

His experience across domestic financial markets and international banking is expected to remain relevant as the lender pursues opportunities in Nigeria’s evolving financial services industry. <Cite refs={[“turn624377search2″,”turn624377search4”]}/>

Educational Background and Professional Qualifications

Adelagun holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Ilorin and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Lagos Business School.

He has also completed the Executive Management Programme at IESE Business School and undertaken executive education at INSEAD.

In addition, he is a fellow of the Financial Markets Dealers Association (FMDA), the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and the ACI Financial Markets Association.

His academic qualifications and professional experience span banking leadership, financial markets development and executive management. <Cite refs={[“turn624377search2″,”turn624377search3”]}/>

Outlook for Standard Chartered Nigeria

Adelagun’s confirmation provides continuity in the leadership of Standard Chartered’s Nigerian operations following the transition of former Nigeria CEO Dalu Ajene to a regional leadership position.

The bank’s stated priorities include strengthening client relationships, supporting investment flows and connecting Nigerian businesses with opportunities across international markets.

As he assumes the substantive role, the bank’s ability to translate these priorities into sustainable business growth will be an important factor in its performance in Nigeria.

For the wider financial sector, the appointment underscores the continuing importance of international banking networks in facilitating investment, cross-border commerce and access to global financial services.
