Nigeria Pushes for Direct Spain Flights, Stronger Trade and Investment Ties

Nigeria is seeking to deepen economic ties with Spain through stronger trade and investment cooperation, improved air connectivity and the revitalisation of existing bilateral agreements.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, outlined the priorities after presenting his Letters of Credence to King Felipe VI at the Royal Palace in Madrid on Monday, formally commencing his diplomatic assignment in the country.

Ikpeazu called for existing agreements between Nigeria and Spain to be reviewed and updated to reflect current economic and diplomatic priorities, with particular attention to the Bilateral Air Service Agreement.

The ambassador said improved direct air connectivity between the two countries could support increased trade, investment, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

Expanding Nigeria-Spain Economic Cooperation

Ikpeazu identified trade and investment, energy, infrastructure, agriculture, education, culture, tourism and security as key areas in which Nigeria is seeking deeper cooperation with Spain.

He said Nigeria was prepared to work with the Spanish government, relevant institutions and private-sector organisations to identify new commercial opportunities and increase investment flows between both countries.

The push reflects efforts to move Nigeria-Spain relations beyond traditional diplomatic engagement towards stronger commercial and institutional partnerships.

Direct air connectivity could play an important role in that process by making travel between both markets easier for investors, businesses and tourists while supporting broader commercial exchanges.

Speaking at a reception hosted by the Nigerian Embassy in Madrid following the credentials ceremony, Ikpeazu advocated a more sustained bilateral partnership involving government institutions, businesses, universities, cultural organisations, civil society and local communities.

Revitalising Bilateral Agreements

A major focus of the ambassador’s agenda is the review and revitalisation of existing agreements between Nigeria and Spain.

Ikpeazu specifically highlighted the Bilateral Air Service Agreement, arguing that stronger direct air links could facilitate business activity while supporting tourism and closer relations between citizens of both countries.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to ensure that existing bilateral frameworks deliver practical economic outcomes.

Ikpeazu said the relationship between Nigeria and Spain offered significant opportunities for expanded cooperation and called for broader stakeholder participation in developing those opportunities.

Private Sector Seen as Key Partner

The ambassador also placed the private sector at the centre of efforts to strengthen economic relations.

Greater engagement between Nigerian and Spanish companies could potentially expand investment across sectors such as energy, infrastructure and agriculture while creating opportunities for partnerships in tourism, education and other services.

Ikpeazu pledged to work with the Spanish government, diplomatic community, private sector and development partners to translate the goodwill between both countries into concrete economic and institutional outcomes.

Nigerian Diaspora as Economic Bridge

Nigerians living in Spain are also expected to play a role in strengthening bilateral relations.

Ikpeazu described the Nigerian community as an important bridge between both countries, particularly in promoting greater understanding, friendship and cooperation.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Embassy’s commitment to promoting and protecting the interests of Nigerians living in Spain while strengthening their engagement with the diplomatic mission.

The reception in Madrid was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, Spanish government representatives, business and cultural stakeholders and members of the Nigerian community.

Nigeria and Spain already maintain cooperation across economic, diplomatic, cultural and people-to-people areas. The renewed push is focused on translating those established ties into greater trade, investment, connectivity and commercial opportunities for both countries.
