MTN Nigeria has committed approximately ₦864.8 billion to expanding its telecommunications infrastructure during the first nine months of 2026, reinforcing its investment in broadband connectivity and improved network performance.

The investment represents a 14.2% increase in capital expenditure, excluding leases, compared with the corresponding period in the previous year.

According to the company’s unaudited financial results for the period ended September 30, 2026, MTN’s subscriber base expanded to 94.7 million, including 57.2 million active data users.

The figures highlight the growing demand for reliable internet access as more Nigerians depend on digital services for business, education, communication and entertainment.

Strengthening Nigeria’s Digital Infrastructure

A major component of MTN’s investment strategy is the expansion of fibre-to-the-home broadband services.

The company revealed that its fibre broadband network now accounts for approximately 13% of total data traffic, helping to reduce pressure on its mobile network.

MTN Nigeria Chief Executive Officer Karl Toriola emphasised the importance of continuous infrastructure investment in meeting rising customer expectations.

However, network disruptions, particularly fibre cuts and damage to telecommunications infrastructure, remain significant challenges.

Strong Financial Performance Supports Expansion

Alongside its infrastructure investment, MTN reported impressive financial results for the nine-month period.

Service revenue increased by 23.7% to approximately ₦4.6 trillion, while profit after tax rose by 55.3% to ₦1.17 trillion.

The company also reported earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of ₦2.6 trillion, reflecting improved financial performance.

What This Means for Nigerian Businesses

Reliable telecommunications infrastructure is essential for Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

For entrepreneurs, improved broadband access can support e-commerce, online payments, remote working, digital marketing and technology-driven services.

Better network capacity could also benefit businesses that rely on uninterrupted communication with customers and suppliers.

The Bigger Picture

MTN’s continued investment signals growing confidence in Nigeria’s telecommunications market.

Nevertheless, the ultimate benefit to consumers will depend on whether the additional spending delivers measurable improvements in network reliability, internet speeds, service availability and customer experience.
