Nigerians planning to travel during the Christmas holiday season are facing significantly higher transportation costs, with domestic airfares on several major routes rising sharply ahead of the festive period.

According to findings reported by Punch Newspapers, economy-class flight tickets for December 20 and 21, 2026, have climbed to between ₦196,000 and ₦337,500 on selected routes connecting Lagos and Abuja to destinations in the South-East and South-South.

The sharp increases highlight the financial pressure that seasonal travel demand can place on passengers.

Major Routes Record Steep Price Increases

One of the most significant increases was recorded on the Lagos–Asaba route operated by Aero Contractors.

The airline’s economy fare increased from approximately ₦106,286 for November 9 to ₦327,940 for December 20, representing an increase of about 208%.

Air Peace also listed Lagos–Asaba economy tickets at ₦337,500 for December 21, compared with ₦118,400 for November 9.

On the Abuja–Enugu route, Air Peace fares increased from ₦116,400 to ₦335,500.

Other affected routes include Lagos–Benin and Lagos–Uyo, although the scale of the increases varies considerably.

These are comparisons between travel dates rather than a uniform increase across every domestic flight.

What Is Driving the Increase?

The Christmas period traditionally brings increased demand for flights as Nigerians travel to visit family members, attend celebrations and return to their hometowns.

With demand concentrated around particular dates and destinations, available seats may become substantially more expensive.

Nevertheless, the latest increases have renewed questions about how airlines determine their fares during peak travel periods.

Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission previously raised concerns about unusually high seasonal fares and possible anti-competitive pricing practices.

Impact on Households and Businesses

Rising airfares could force households to increase their holiday budgets or reconsider their travel arrangements.

Businesses that depend on domestic flights for staff movement, logistics and client meetings may also face additional expenses.

The consequences could be particularly significant for individuals who rely on air travel because of distance, convenience or road-safety concerns.

The Bigger Picture

The latest fare increases demonstrate the challenges of affordable air transportation in Nigeria.

While seasonal demand can influence ticket prices, transparency in pricing and effective consumer protection remain important.

For travellers, comparing airlines, checking alternative dates and booking before peak travel periods may help reduce costs, although cheaper fares are not guaranteed.
