FG constructing 6,112 homes in North – Minister
The Federal Government has commenced the construction of 6,112 housing units across key northern states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano, Benue, and several others. This is part of the ongoing Renewed Hope Housing Programme, which aims to address housing deficits while spurring job creation and economic development.
This was disclosed by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, during an interactive session in Kaduna, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation on Tuesday.
“The Renewed Hope Housing Programme is a core strategy of the current administration to leverage housing as a tool for economic empowerment, social stability, and poverty alleviation,” Dangiwa said.
Housing Projects by Location
-
FCT (Karsana): 3,112 units
-
Kano: 1,500 units
-
Benue, Katsina, Gombe, Yobe, Sokoto, and Nasarawa: 250-unit estates in each state (total: 1,500 units)
All project sites are being developed with integrated road networks, potable water systems, solar-powered street lighting, and essential infrastructure to ensure livable communities.
Massive Job Creation and Economic Impact
The initiative has already created over 152,000 direct and indirect jobs, with many local artisans reportedly earning up to ₦150,000 monthly, contributing to household incomes and stimulating local economies.
Future Expansion Plans
Dangiwa also announced an ambitious plan to build 100 affordable homes in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas under the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme.
Additionally, the Ministry is working to:
-
Expand access to mortgage and rent-to-own financing
-
Develop building material manufacturing hubs to reduce construction costs
Humanitarian and Urban Renewal Efforts
In response to displacement caused by conflicts, the government is constructing 252 homes across Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Benue, and Sokoto. A pilot project is currently underway in Tudun Biri, Kaduna, to support victims of the December 2023 military airstrike.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has completed over 150 urban renewal and slum upgrade projects, with an additional 100 ongoing across locations such as:
-
Tudun Wada (Sokoto)
-
Yankaba (Kano)
-
Tunga (Niger)
Infrastructure and Social Services
Through its Special Projects Unit, the Ministry has delivered:
-
71 classrooms
-
15 health centres
-
58 boreholes
-
63 rural access roads
These developments are backed by an investment exceeding ₦61 billion, creating over 10,700 additional jobs.
Dangiwa concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to rebuilding lives and restoring dignity through inclusive housing development.
