Nestlé trains 100 in plastic waste management
In a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s recycling sector and promoting environmental sustainability, Nestlé Nigeria Plc has trained 100 plastic waste workers across Lagos and Abuja under its Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Training Programme.
The initiative is part of Nestlé’s broader commitment to social inclusion and fostering a circular economy through improved waste management practices. It also aligns with the company’s goal of building a waste-free future while empowering those at the frontline of recycling.
Improving Safety and Productivity
The training covered crucial areas such as:
-
Workplace health and safety
-
Responsible handling of recyclable materials
-
Fire prevention and rescue procedures
-
Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Participants also received PPE kits to enhance their working conditions and reduce occupational risks.
Speaking on the initiative, Victoria Uwadoka, Nestlé Nigeria’s Corporate Communications and Sustainability Lead, said:
“We recognise the important role plastic waste workers play in tackling pollution and supporting a circular economy. This training helps improve their safety, employability, and quality of life while boosting productivity within the waste value chain.”
Regulatory Endorsements and Industry Support
The programme was implemented in partnership with NESREA, the Recyclers Association of Nigeria, and the Food Beverage Recycling Alliance, and executed by ImpactCrest Consulting.
Commending the initiative, NESREA Director-General, Prof. Innocent Barikor, said:
“Waste workers are often underappreciated despite playing a critical role in managing plastic pollution. Nestlé’s focus on their health and safety is a commendable step toward sustainable environmental practices.”
At the Lagos training session, Mayowa Elefin, Managing Director of Maladase Ecopreneur Management Company, praised the programme, stating:
“This training has significantly improved our staff’s understanding of safety protocols and best practices. It will help create healthier workplaces and enhance efficiency in our operations.”
A Step Toward a Circular, Inclusive Future
Nestlé’s SHE training initiative is a practical step in supporting the informal waste sector and building a more inclusive, sustainable waste management system in Nigeria. By investing in people and the planet, the company continues to demonstrate leadership in corporate responsibility and sustainability.
