Focus of the Visit
Mayor Sadiq Khan’s visit aimed to deepen the UK-Nigeria economic partnership, celebrate shared cultural ties between London and Lagos, and promote London’s appeal as a global business and cultural hub.
“This is the first visit of its kind by a Mayor of London,” Khan noted. “Africa is home to the world’s fastest-growing populations and some of the most dynamic economies. Over the next decade, London sees immense opportunities to strengthen our partnerships in finance, health, education, tech, creative industries, and sustainability.”
He also praised the contributions of Africans and people of African heritage to the growth and vibrancy of London, describing the visit as a moment to celebrate shared culture, heritage, and future potential.
UK Officials React
British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jonny Baxter, described the visit as a testament to the UK’s long-term commitment to economic and cultural collaboration with Nigeria.
“Our work through the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership is unlocking new pathways to innovation, from fintech to fashion,” he said.
UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins of Highbury, added: “This visit is a strong demonstration of our resolve to build long-lasting, respectful, and mutually beneficial relationships with African countries. Strengthening trade and cultural links is crucial for inclusive and sustainable growth.”
Beyond Nigeria
Following his engagements in Lagos, Sadiq Khan will extend the trade mission to Accra, Johannesburg, and Cape Town, as part of a broader effort to reinforce economic and cultural links between London and major African cities.
